Why a PDF needs cropping
Scanned PDFs almost always keep an edge: the dark border of the paper, a shadow from the scanner lid, or a wide empty strip around the text. On screen it looks skewed and messy, and when printed the text looks small because the layout sits off-centre. Trimming the margins makes the page look full, the text easier to read, and the file nicer to share or upload.
What cropping a PDF actually does
Cropping a PDF changes the area the reader displays, it does not delete the content. Anything outside the crop box is hidden, but the text and images stay inside the PDF. That means selectable text keeps working, and the result opens in any common PDF reader.
Because nothing is deleted, the file size usually stays about the same. If your goal is a smaller file for email, use Compress PDF after cropping. If you really want to remove what is outside the box, the page has to be turned into an image first.
How to crop a PDF with Velfile
- Open Crop PDF and pick a PDF from your device (up to 100 MB).
- Drag the crop box or pull one of its corners. Use the arrow keys to move the box, and the arrow keys on a corner handle to resize it. Hold Shift for bigger steps.
- Step through the pages with the previous and next buttons to make sure the box fits every page. The same crop is applied to the whole document.
- Check the original and cropped page sizes, then press Save PDF and download the result.
Tips for a clean crop
- Leave a little room around the text instead of hugging the letters. A crop that is too tight can cut off a signature, a page number, or a note in the margin.
- For a scanned PDF that is crooked, rotate the pages first with Organize PDF, then crop. The crop box follows the page view, so cropping a crooked page leaves an uneven edge.
- If only some pages need cropping, split them out, crop that part, then merge it back.
- Check the first page, any page with a wide table, and the last page before saving. Those three most often have a different size or layout.
Cropping a single page
This tool uses one crop box for every page, scaling it to fit each page size. If only one or two pages need trimming, use Split PDF to pull those pages out, crop the split file, then merge it back with the rest.
If the problem is just a page facing the wrong way, you don't need to crop: use Organize PDF (rotate pages) to rotate the page and save it.
After cropping
- Open the result and scroll through every page. Make sure no text, signature, or image is cut off at the edge.
- If you need to combine it with another document, merge it with Merge PDF after every part has been cropped.
- If the file is still too big to send, shrink it with Compress PDF so it fits an email attachment or upload limit.
- If the source is a photo of paper, start with Scan Document so it is already straight and tidy before cropping.
All cropping runs in your browser, on your own device. The PDF is never uploaded, and your original file stays unchanged.
