How to rotate or flip a photo

Fix a photo that opens on its side or upside down, or flip it like a mirror, right in your browser.

Why some photos open sideways

A phone camera does not turn the picture when you hold it upright. It saves the pixels the way the sensor sees them and adds a small note to the file that says which way up the photo should be shown. Apps that read the note show the photo correctly. Apps that ignore it, such as some websites, older programs or upload forms, show the photo on its side.

The cure is to turn the picture itself, so that the pixels are right and no note is needed. That is what the steps below do.

Option 1: Rotate it in your gallery or photo app

Your phone and computer already have a rotate button. In most gallery apps you open the photo, choose Edit and then Rotate. On Windows, the Photos app has a rotate button, and on a Mac you can use Preview. This is a good first choice when you have the app at hand. Some apps only change the note and leave the pixels alone, so check the photo again on the site where you need to use it.

Option 2: Rotate or flip it with Velfile

When the gallery option does not help, or you are on a shared computer, use Rotate Image.

  1. Open Rotate Image and choose your photo. JPG, PNG, WebP and iPhone HEIC photos all work.
  2. Press Rotate left or Rotate right until the picture sits the right way up. Each press turns it by 90 degrees.
  3. Press Flip horizontally or Flip vertically if you want a mirror image.
  4. Press Download.

The preview changes as you press, and the size of the new file is shown before you download. The work happens in your browser, on your own device, so the photo is not uploaded to a server. If you make a mistake, press Undo all to go back to the original.

Rotate or flip: which one do you need?

Be careful with flips when a photo contains writing, such as a sign, a shirt or a document. After a horizontal flip, the text reads backwards. If you only want the photo the right way up, rotate it and leave the flips alone.

Keep the quality

PNG pictures are saved without any loss. JPG and WebP pictures are saved again at high quality, which can cost a very small amount of detail each time. So turn the photo once, keep the result, and do not rotate the same file again and again. If you are not sure which way is right, look at the preview before you press Download.

What to do next

After the photo is the right way up, you might want to cut away the edges with Crop Image, or make the file smaller with Compress Image so it fits an upload limit.
