What background removal does
Background removal separates the person in a photo from everything behind them. You can then save the person on a transparent background, for a design or a presentation, or put them on a plain colour such as white, red or blue, for a form or a profile picture.
The tool finds the person automatically. It is made for portraits, so it works best when a face and shoulders are clearly visible.
Take a photo that cuts out cleanly
The result depends a lot on the original photo. A few habits give clean edges, especially around hair.
- Stand in front of a plain wall, ideally one that is lighter or darker than your hair and clothes.
- Use soft, even light, such as a window in front of you. Strong shadows on the wall confuse the edges.
- Keep some distance from the wall, so your shadow does not fall on it.
- Wear clothes in a different colour from the background.
- Hold the camera steady and keep the whole head inside the frame.
How to do it with Velfile
- Open Remove Background and choose your photo. JPG, PNG and WebP up to 50 MB are accepted. The first time, the tool downloads a small AI model of about 25 MB, and your browser keeps it for later visits.
- Wait a moment while the tool finds the person.
- Check the edges in the preview. Under Touch up the result, use Erase to paint away background that is left, or Restore to bring back parts that were cut by mistake.
- Under Background, choose Transparent, White, Red or Blue.
- Press Download.
Your photo is processed in your browser. Only the model file is downloaded, and your photo is not uploaded to a server.
Fixing rough edges
Hair, glasses and loose clothes are the hardest parts. Zoom your browser in, or turn your phone sideways, and use a small brush for fine work near the hair. A small brush gives a cleaner edge than a big one. If you make a wrong stroke, press Undo. Reset edits goes back to the first result.
PNG or JPG?
Transparent saves a PNG. A PNG can be larger, but it keeps the see-through background, so it is the right choice when you want to place the person on another picture. White, red and blue save a JPG, which is smaller and easier to upload to a form. If the file is still too large, shrink it with Compress Image.
What it is not good at
The tool is tuned for people. Products, animals and objects can come out with rough or missing edges, and you may need the brush to fix them. Very large photos are scaled down so the longest side is at most 2500 pixels, which keeps your browser from running out of memory.
For an ID photo
If you need a red or blue background for a form, you can use this tool and then fix the size with Crop Image or Resize Image.
