When one PDF is better than many
Many applications ask for a single PDF: a job application with a CV, a cover letter and certificates, a loan request with several supporting papers, or a school registration with scans of different documents. Sending ten separate files is easy to get wrong. A reader can miss one, open them in the wrong order, or the upload page may simply accept only one file.
Merging puts all the pages into one document, one after the other, so the person reading it can scroll from start to end.
Before you merge
A few minutes of preparation saves you from redoing the work.
- Name the files so you recognise them. When you add several files at once, clear names such as "1 cover letter" and "2 CV" make the order easy to check.
- Fix pages that are sideways. If a scan is turned the wrong way, correct it with Rotate PDF first. Otherwise the merged file will have a page that the reader has to turn.
- Turn photos into PDFs. If some of your documents are photos or scans saved as JPG, use JPG to PDF to turn them into PDFs, or add them all in one go there.
- Remove pages you do not need. If a file has extra pages, use Split PDF to pull out only the pages you want.
How to merge with Velfile
- Open Merge PDF and choose two or more PDF files. You can add up to 20 files at a time, each up to 100 MB.
- Use the up and down controls to put the files in the order you want. The first file in the list becomes the first pages of the result.
- Press Merge PDFs, then Download PDF.
The merge happens in your browser, on your own device. The files are not uploaded to a server, which is useful when they contain personal documents.
Check the result
Open the merged file and scroll through it before you send it. Look at three things: that the files are in the right order, that no page is sideways or upside down, and that nothing is missing at the end. It takes one minute, and it is much easier than explaining a mistake later.
What may not carry over
The pages are copied as they are, so how they look stays the same. Interactive parts, however, such as fillable form fields or bookmarks, may not be kept. If your PDF is a form that still needs to be filled in, fill it in first and save it, then merge.
If the merged file is too large
Merging adds the sizes of the files together, so the result can be too large for an email or an upload form. Run it through Compress PDF afterwards. In Keep text mode the text stays selectable and only the photos and scans are made smaller. For a file made mostly of scans, Smallest file mode gives a much smaller result, but the text can no longer be selected.
If you have more than 20 files, merge them in two rounds: merge the first group, merge the second group, then merge the two results.
