How to make a small photo bigger and sharper for free

Enlarge a small photo, sharpen it and calm the noise, then compare before and after and save the result.

What "enhancing" a photo really does

Enhancing a small photo means making it larger and cleaner at the same time. The tool enlarges the picture 2x or 4x, calms the grain, and sharpens the edges so the result does not look soft. It works with what is already in the photo, so a good small photo gets a lot better, and a very blurry one gets only a little better.

Know the limits first

No tool can bring back detail that was never in the picture. If a face is only a few pixels wide, enlarging it will not reveal eyes and skin. The best results come from photos that are small or compressed but still reasonably sharp, such as an old profile picture, a screenshot, or a photo saved from a chat app.

Quick mode or AI mode?

AI mode works on a smaller copy of your photo, up to 800 px (Fast) or 1200 px (Detailed) on the longest side, and then enlarges it 2x. On a phone, choose Fast. For a very large photo, Quick keeps more pixels.

How to do it with Velfile

  1. Open Enhance Photo (HD) and choose your photo. JPG, PNG and WebP up to 50 MB are accepted.
  2. Under Mode, pick Quick or AI. For AI, also pick the AI photo size.
  3. Under Enlarge by, pick 2x or 4x.
  4. Leave Sharpen on Light unless the result looks too soft. Switch on Reduce noise (light) for a grainy photo.
  5. Choose JPG for a smaller file, or PNG if you plan to edit the photo more.
  6. Press Enhance. Use Before and After to compare, then press Download.

Your photo is processed in your browser. In AI mode only the model file is downloaded, and your photo is not uploaded to a server.

If the result looks wrong

After you enhance

A 4x photo can be a large file. If a form limits the size, shrink it with Compress Image. If you need an exact width and height, use Resize Image. For a profile photo or an ID photo with a plain background, try Remove Background or ID Photo (Pas Foto).
